Solenoid ignition switch removal

I just purchased an 1986 2.8 V6 Camaro from a buddy of mine. The car was stolen and recovered, but the steering column was smashed to smithereens.

I replaced the column with one from a pick-n-pull, but now I have to replace the ignition switch so I can start the car with a key (Currently I'm using the starter switch further down the column. )

My buddy suggested that I drill out the old one. I don't want to have to replace the column again, so are there any caveats to doing this? The only controls on the column are for the blinkers and windshield wipers.

Anyone have some tips to make the removel process easier?

Thanks in advancd for any info you guys can provide.

Welcome aboard.

Go get yourself a Haynes shop manual for the car. It will have a section that covers the tumbler removal. It involves pulling the steering wheel, for which you'll need a steering wheel puller and lock plate depression tool. You can buy these if you think you might want to have them, or you can get them on loan from Autozone.
