Would this setup need self-aligning rockers, and valve cover clearance?
I've decided to go with a set of 1.6 roller rockers. Now I know that 88-up motors used self-aligning rockers. My motor is from an 89, but my heads are AFR 195's. I can't remember if I had guideplates in there or not. Also, do you need to have tall valve covers for these to fit? Thanks.
You have to find out if you have guide-plates or not. If you do you need to order none self alighning rockers arms for centerbolt valve covers. Or you can modify the valve cover to work with different rockers. Or just get bigger valve covers. Personally i like the stock valve covers so i would order the rockers made to work with them.
I just pulled one of my covers, and the AFR heads definitely have guide plates. I ordered a set of Harland Sharp 1.6 rockers (non self-adjusting), and after looking at my valve covers again (aftermarket), I don't think clearance will be an issue at all.
