Most Basic question ever!!!!
89 camaro, 305 tpi
I could not find the amount of oil required for the engine in the owner's manual. All I know is that it takes 10w30. Now I looked up my old oil change bills and I was charged for 5 liters everytime. So, I put about 4.8 L and took a look at the dipstick and im over the "operating range" by about 1/2in.
What is the amount im supposed to put in and is it bad to over fill???
Thanks.

Did you run it to fill the filter before you checked the dipstick?

I hope you mean quarts and not liters.
The manual should read 5W30.
Yes 5 quarts.
Also, pull the dipstick first, wipe it, then stick it in again and pull it out.
As 5.7 kid suggested, run it first so the filter will take up some of that oil.

I usually fill my new filter with oil before I install it (wiping a bit of new oil on the rubber seal as well)...

Actually his manual should read 10w30, v6's of the late 80's used 5w30, my manual for my 88' tpi says 10w30.

Not to jack the post, but I have a related question.
I've installed and oil cooler with a sandwich plate at the filter, and it runs the oil out in front of the rad. to the cooler. When I pull off the filter, does that oil run back out of the adaptor. Would it depend on gravity and each individual situation??
When I change the oil, I put in bout 4.5 qts total(305) and my stick reads full after check-start.
