TA, on the V8 the numbers will be on the front of the engine. They will be facing up, directly in front of and below the driver head. The transmission numbers depend on weather you have an auto or manual. Manual numbers are stamped on the driver side, adjacent to the rear cover, or below the side cover. Auto numbers are on the passenger side of the case, just in behind and above the pan. Got this info from a haynes manuel for camaro, but should be the same for firebird. Hope this helps.

Head numbers are under the rocker covers. They will be casting numbers between the valves.
Engine casting numbers are at the back behind the drivers side head. You can see them when looking down at the back. Block casting numbers don't mean much except they can easily tell if the block is a small bore 305 or a bigger bore 350 casting. The important numbers are stamped in a pad in front of the passenger head. They're normally hard to see and read. These numbers will tell you exactly what car the engine came out of.
Tranny numbers? Third gen manuals, unless it's a very early model are T5 trannies. Automatics, unless it's a very early model, are 700R4. It's easier to identify an automatic by learning the shape of the oil pan.
There are date codes on the block, heads and tranny if you know what you're looking for and how to decode them. Something like 03/4 could mean March 1974, 1984, 1994 etc. For most people, date codes are not something they need to know.
