Testing Speedometer... and related... Which VSS?

Ok, heres a few questions i need answered...

About a year ago i'd say my speedometer went out, well it stopped displaying... It died a very weird death, one momentr it started like jumping, going up and down up and down, then it stopped. The next morning it worked fine for half an hour, then did the same as the night before, and never came back...

I need to test whether it is the VSS, the guage or the yellow box thing in the car.

I have all the wiring down in my head, so tell me a wire and what voltage to apply to test my guage and i'm golden.

On my other thirdgen, i am changing from a 9 bolt 2.72 rear end, to a 4th gen 10 bolt 3.42 rear end, what RPO code had 3.42 gears in thirdgen's?

you know my spedometer did the same thing, when i got the car someone was nice enough to leave a new cable in the back for me i put it on and pulled the the gear out of the tranny it was trashed as well i hunted and searched and finialy got one (after haveing to go to the junkyard to get the proper housing for that style gear) worked for about a week still too pissed to tear back into it lol but check your gears and cable for any binding if everythings okay then move on to the vss
