Hello all,
This vacuum leak is kick my @ss. Anyways I have a 1989 Firebird with a 383 and a superram, and at idle i hear this whining noise, (like the noise that comes in your speaker) however I remove the serp belt and start her up and still hear the noise. I looked at all the vacuum lines and they look good. at idle I have 12 hg and when I am driving approx 30 mph, I take foot off gas then the my vacuum goes to about 20 hg and the whining noise is a much higher pitch, and when I give it gas, or go below approx 5 hg the noise goes away. I need some help/tricks to find this leak, I really dont want to take off superram as it is a major pain the in the @ss. Any suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated.

Easy trick, take a 2 foot peice of vacuum line or if you have a machanics stethiscope, remove the metal rod and listen through it while moving around the motor. If you suspect that it might be the intake, start there first. Just move the end of the hose around and you should be able to find it if there is a leak.

There is also a method of using some sort of fuel like propane or something like that. Not sure exactly how you do it but someone may chime in on it.

Hey, so should it sound like the leak itself or what, I have the metal stethiscope, I will remove the rod and just move about the intake or something. I have a vaccum pump, trying to figure out a way to use that insead of haveing the motor running, I sprayed carb clearner all over the intake a vaccum hoses with no luck, I will try the hose trick, anybody else have any ideas?

 

i use a squirt bottle of water or hose and run water over possible areas the leak may be....a rpm change will let you know youve found it.....carb cleaner will work good too but could be hazardous............tao

 

Update:

Found the leak, leave it to Accel Super Ram and its runners, broken gasket, very hard to see and very small.

Time to go buy a case of beer or two and start to fix this tomrrow, Super Rams are NOT easy to take off...
