Starter engagement

Hello,

When I start my car it sounds as if the starter spins/engages too long. ie, the car starts but then there is this metal tyoe grinding type sound. A guy today said it was either the starter or the flywheel. Any ideas?

Is it possible to change the cranking length? etc etc...

Thanks,

Kyle

The amount of time the starter remains engaged is usually directly proportional to how long you hold the key in the START position. If the starter pinion or fork is binding or worn, the pinion may remain engaged longer than it should. It may be time to remove and inspect the starter.

If you were hearing that noise and the car wasnt starting then I would suspect the starter or flywheel... seems to me you just have an iffy starter, Starters are relativey cheap for our cars and some have lifetime warranties.

Sorry let me mention that it is a LT1 starter due to having installed the t56.

But I will inspect it for sure. Would spacing/shiming it help in anyway?

Thanks,

Kyle

shimming the starter wont keep the starter from engaging longer than its suppose to. You probably have a solenoid thats starting to short
