First time engine assembly
First time engine assembly
I am putting together my first roller motor and was hoping to get a rundown of what to do, and what not to do.
It's a 91 350, went with a zz4 cam, re-using stock lifters.
Had the block line bored and cleaned up, re-using pistons and rods since they are in good shape.
Carbed, if that makes a difference.
Since this is my first engine assembly, I am nervous and looking for advice.
Should I soak the lifters in oil?
How do I set the rockers?
How should I install the rear 1 piece main?
My biggest concern is startup. I always have a problem getting motors to fire right up.

I tore apart the whole topend of my motor a few months back and when it was all said and done, the engine would not start. I tried for 4 days to see what the problem was. No missing connections, all wires, motor was turning over, just no spark.
No hope left, so I took it to the dealer. They found the problem. The distributor has 2 electical plugs. I plugged them both in. Well, one of the plugs looks exactly like another plug nearby in one of the emissions peices.
So $200 later, I found out the hard way.."KEEP REALLY GOOD TRACK OF YOUR ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS!!!"
Good luck.

On the hyd rollers, some say do soak, some say not too.
I put assembly lube on the outside of them, without soakin, without any problems.
Do a search on the overhead adj.
Rear main, installit in the housing, then on the crank, then oil pan, just make sure the crank is clean, use a small amount of oil if needed.{small}.
Dont forget them ground wires on the back of the heads/if any.
