help...hot gas

help...last night i took my iroc to the track for the first time and made one run and got back in the staging lanes. i tried to start it up and it wouldn't start and sounded like it was being starved for gas. we got it towed to the pits and we advanced the timing and it started and then moved the timing back to about 10*. while it was sitting there running it started stumbling and stuttering and then shut off but while it was running the exhaust got so hot that it heated the gas tank so much that almost all of my gas turned to vapor. i took my gas cap off and the gas vapor coming out of the tank was so hot it burnt me. any help would be greatly appreciated

This is a design problem.
The '88 TPI I bought had this problem bad. It had a catco converter and a flowmaster muffler on it.
It got terrible mileage and most of the gas went out of the tank by way of the gascap as vapor when it was run hard.
