Timing Mark, Anyone??
Timing Mark, Anyone??
new to the site, and got a problem...
I just got THE Z28 that I've liusted after for 20 yrs!! my uncle bought it new in 83, and i've ALWAYS wanted it, well after he lost interest and let it sit for 2 yrs, I finally talked him out of it...now starts the problem!! I have put a trans in it, new fuel pump, filters, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. After a week of frustration, and an injector rebuild, we finally got the thing running, only now it runs like CRAP!!! it's rough, will not idle, and doesn't have power to pull, i'm relatively sure it has something to do w/ the timing, but i can't find a timing mark anywhere...help me!!

I take it you know what a harmonic balancer is, there is a mark (looks like half a triangle IIRC on top right behind the balancer) With the engine running and the timing light pointed at the top of the HB, loosen the dizzy and rotate is slightly until you find TDC. Then adjust accordingly, I think 12 degrees past TDC

Well, it's directly center on the engine......on the harmonic balancer. You don't necessarily need the timing light to find it. If you can't see it from the engine bay, just crank the engine...don't start it, just tweak it enough to turn the balancer a little, then look at the balancer. It will be a groove. You might even be able to feel it with your fingers if you can't see it first. A good thing to do is to put a dab of white paint in the groove so it shows up easily with the timing light once you finally adjust it.

Ignition timing doesn't just up and move itself while the car is sitting up. If it was OK last time it was driven, then it's OK now.
I'd recommend leaving it alone, especially since it doesn't sound like you'd know how to go about setting it correctly anyway.
Did you drain and replace the entire contents of the gas tank? Gas, unlike ignition timing, DOES go bad when it sits around.
If you didn't, you probably need another injector rebuild, by now.
They're likely to be full of that funky sludge that gas turns into and plugged up with it.
