what exactly is a nickel block?

Like the title says. What exactly is a "nickel block" and is it better than a standard block? What years were they made and for what applications?

I'm not very literate on the type and number of SBCs out there, but I believe you are referencing a certain type of casting that contained a higher nickel percentage than most typical blocks. "High Nickel" blocks are supposedly a better casting, and have more strength, but I'm basing that on hearsay, as I have no experience with them.

Any time . That sounds like a good base with which to start.

Nothing wrong with free... wish I had one of those haha. Is it in good shape, or are you going to have it machined, etc.?

Would you mind posting the casting numbers on the block?

there was a thread here a while ago dispelling the myth of the high nickel block. Search on it.
It's not a big deal either way.
it's just a run of the mill 350 chev, dont' get too excited about it... 'cept that it's free, that's always a plus.

Thanks sonix, I did a search with no results but I did it on "nickel block" I'll try "high nickel block" instead. You're always a help.

Quick trans am, No I would not mind posting the casting numbers on the block but its at my buddies shop and he's offshore for two weeks. I almost got them Sunday, but I forgot.

All blocks have some nickle in them. Typically, you look for a casting number behind the timing cover. You should see a number 010 or 020. 010 means 1% nickel. 020 means 2% nickel.

I did a few more searches and I found it. Seems debatable as to how to determine if you have one and if there is any benefit at all. But thanks for all the info guys!

'zactly, you saw the thread with the guy who worked casting SBC blocks? So according to that guy, it's an urban legend.
Either way, I highly doubt the block is your weak link where you are now, so it's not really a big deal anyway.

yeah, I saw it and it seems funny because everyone says that the 010/020 under the timing chain is a dead giveaway. According to that guy, it means nothing. Guess you gotta believe the guy that makes the things huh?

Well anyway, it's a four bolt main, free, and going to be .030 over. And yes, i have read all about 4bolt vs. 2 bolt.
