L76 with DOD and VVT

MotorTrend was talking about Chevy's new goal for rear wheel drive platforms, when it mentioned, "V-8s could include the 320-horse, 5.3-liter engine as used in the new Tahoe, or the new alloy-block, 6.0-liter L76 with variable valve timing and gas-saving Displacement on Demand," from this article.
What the heck is the L76? Is it something worth throwing in a thirdgen?

The "L76" is a variant of the 364 CID Chevy small block that has been available for about five years. It's basically the LS1 with a larger bore (4.00 x 3.62).

No. The 364 V-8 has been available for about eight years or so. Factory installed VVT and DOD have not been on that engine yet, AFAIK.

However, cam phasers (VVT) have been used on some GM engines for a few model years now. DOD (or "MDS" as Daimler calls it) first appeared in GM engines back in 1981 - Yes, 25 years ago. It's nothing new, but is now a lot more refined than it used to be.

Sweet. Guess the gas price hike and the sales drop off gave GM a kick in the a$$ to refine DOD.

i would like to see them go a head start developing sleeve valve heads.
its something i had long forgotten about until i recently read about in a magazine.
to me it seems like the most logical path to computer controlled valve timing.

How would VVT (variable valve timing) work with a pushrod motor? And what is a sleeve valve head.. I've always wondered about this?
