cold start up/acceleration problems
First off, when i go out to my car after it has been sitting for more that 3.5 hours it doesnt want to start right up. It will on the first turn of the key but i have to keep the key turned in the ignition for like 5 seconds or so before it will actually start. Usually i can just turn the key and in like .001 seconds the car has started; So what could the problem be. Oh, and the car does start up in .001 seconds when its all warmed up.
Secondly, When I put the pedal to the floor while rolling at around 30 mph the car doesnt want to shift from second to third (i think) until the rpms get upto like 5000 and then i have to let off the accelerator a little bit and then push down again and it will finally shift over. This also just started happening like a weekish ago. What could the problem be?
Thank you. -Austin

I'd check your TV cable and do some adjusting if needed, I bet that's what the shifting problem is (unless your tranny is just on it's way out). There are alot of threads that will tell you how to properly adjust your TV cable, just search for them.
And the cold start up problem doesn't sound like too much of a problem to me unless it didn't do it before... What kind of mileage does the car have? As cars get older they tend to be a little harder to start while cold. But if you're TPI, maybe the cold start injector has gone out.

It is a TPI and it has 165,000 miles on it. The cold start up problem just began a couple of weeks ago. And i dont know too much about cars yet... whats a tv cable... is it the timing chain? And is it possible that my fuel injectors need cleaning?

there's a search button at the top of this board. i'd plug in whatever words you're interested in learning about since the TV cable has been discussed to a large degree.
TV cable adjustment is fairly simple. On the drivers side of the intake runners there is a bracket that holds the throttle cable and the TV cable linkage. On that bracket there is a button to push either forward or reverse which will change at which point in the RPM range your car shifts. If I remember correctly those TV's are self-adjusting. You might have to use trial and error to see if you like the shifts. Adjust it to one spot, jump in and drive to see where it shifts, and then adjust it again if you don't like where it's positioned. I'd agree with xpndbl3, do a search and you will find lots of information on that subject.
PS. Don't break the plastic piece that holds the TV cable in place!! It's easily done.

For the ignition problem... The car will quickly start up if I first turn the key to the "on" position (just so that the electricity is on) and I am able to hear the fuel or something being injected into the engine, then i turn the car back off and wait 10 sec... then fully turn the key and the car starts right up with no problem. Could my fuel injectors be getting clogged or what? Thanks.

fuel pressure regulator may be going bad or a leaky injector could be causing the pressure to drop, not allowing the motor to start since the injectors aren't seeing any pressure until the pump picks up the slack

When you turn the key to the on position, the fuel pump turns on until it believes the pressure is adequate.
I usually wait til the fuel pump shuts off before I engage the starter.
You might want to browse the technical section and FAQ and some other links off the main page. There is good info there too. I don't know if TV cable adjustment is there.
You might want to get a haynes manual or a Factory manual for your car. I'd recommend the factory manual but it is much more $$$.
you might also want to search for tune up if you just got the car and don't know how well it was cared for.
