Need tips: timing chain

Engine: 400 sbc
Transmission: th350
Axle/Gears: 3.08
Need tips: timing chain
Well I took my timing chain off because I was going to cam it. but now Im just trying to get it runing.. I cant get the timing chain on, i have tried the new one and the old one, both run into the same problems.. if i get it on the tab the bolt holes wont line up, and if I get it on the bolt holes the tab wont line up.. 
HELP! PLEASE!!!!!!!
