Loosing 1qt oil per 1k miles..brand new engine...
Alright, the new enigne was built maybe 4 months ago... max.... runs great, no real solid complaints... except lately, i noticed an oil consumption rating i was very concerned about....
i am seemingly loosing 1qt of oil every 1k miles, and i've got well over 4k miles on the motor now...
i do not have any external oil leaks, no seals or anything....
Where the crankcase opens, ex. PCV, Breather, Brake Booster port, i have what i can only describe as vaporized oil deposits... They wipe clean, but reappear, within a short amount of time... say maybe 500 miles...
plugs all show running a bit on the rich side, but that is to be fixed soon, nothing too rich to wash the walls...
my static compression was calculated at 10.1:1...
where could my oil be going?
when i start up, i get a grey cloud of smoke sometimes containing small amounts of blue, but i figure thats my motor running rich for startup... Could my PCV valve be sucking oil vapor too?
what is ya'll best guess?

If I'm not mistaken, there are only two direct paths for oil into the combustion chamber, past the rings or past the valve guides. Other than that.... maybe the pcv is doing it, but I'd think that much could only be caused by ring blow-by into the crank case.
Does it seem to puff air out of the oil filler port in the valve cover while the engine is running?

not much, but enough to notice, PCV system is working great, but i think rather then having one pcv and a breather i will install two pcv and no breather and see what she does, if negative pressure in the crank case is as good as they say, then it cant hurt...
otherwise i'm out for another rering...
i used total seal rings as well... dont understand how i am getting so much blow by...

yes, atleast 190psi on all cylenders...
i jus changed my oil today, my oil had a seemingly large amount of gasoline in it... i may attribute this to the blow by... i might be runing so rich i am having fuel go by the rings...
but after my oil change, she runs kedall sae50 sythentic blend motor oil, and no blow by now, no vapors espaping from the pcv....
which means the thin oil created by the gasoline in the oil is causing my blow by...
which means, i'll need to rering eventually, but hopefully not now, and get the car running leaner....

same problem
Im having the same problem, just more severe. I only have 700 miles or so on the engine, but i lose like a qt. of oil per 300 miles or so... How do i check if im having ring/valve blowby? Right now i have no exterior leaks that i have seen, nor does it smoke when i start it... The only thing i have seen is substantial amt. of oil in my air filter housing, from the tube on the passenger side valve covers. Anyway, any insight would be nice!

how did you guys break in your engines? the preferred way to seat the rings in a brand new or rebuilt engine is after you do your cam break in(for flat tappett 2000 rpm for 20 min or so) make all nessecary carb and timing adjustments and drive the car to a straight low traffic area. get up to 30mph and go WOT to 50mph then let engine braking slow you back to 30mph. repeat this at least 10 times. this provides proper loading of the thrust faces of the rings and assures proper seating. that is if the cylinder walls had the proper finish at assembly and proper size rings installed
hope this helps

kinda
I didnt do the cam break in, since i used the same cam from my last engine, which had only made in 500 miles. I did do the ring seating process on both engines. If it didnt seat yet, can i do it again and still get it to work? or are they stuck where they are? And how do i do a compression test?

What heads? I had trickflows and the rocker studs protrude into the intake passage and I was loosing about a quart every 500 miles because oil was getting sucked down the threads and being burned.

no idea
i actually have no idea what heads i have, if the question was directed at me. They came with the first motor i bought. I had them cleaned up and rebuilt, and stuck them on there. They may be a major point of problems for me just cuz they were crap to begin with. dunno. anyway, ill be replacing them when i can, but itll be a while. the good news is that i know for a fact that the studs arent in the intake area, because i ported the heads my self and looked in there alot, i think i would have notices that.
