91 Rs' knocking on 93 octane

i have had this 91 Rs 305 for a while now and a while back ith threw a SES light and went away has never came back but the next day it started knocking at random times and is extremly bad underheavy load uphill starts and any speed except under acceleration of more than 1/4 throttle but completly random there seems to be no power loss i have changed the fuelfilter plugs 2 times wires, cap, rotor ,msd blaster coil, i did the tbi mods checked timing it is 4* retarded with est disconnected and i have adjusted the valve lash everyway known to man i have even opened the gap on plugs to .045 and still wont go away but put Vp race gas in it and it runs like a champ no noise what so every...any ideas cause this is killing me

so is it knocking with the 93 octane, but not on lower octane? maybe your timing is to far retarted or your starving the enigine for fuel, because higher octane prevents knock not cause it

You say that you have the timing 4 deg. retarded. So does that mean that you have the base timing set to 2 deg. instead of 6 deg. ?

I'm wondering if you are running too lean... maybe the race fuel masks that. I'd look at cleaning or replacing the fuel injectors. Look for manifold or vacuum leaks too. Maybe the O2 sensor caused the SES light?

motor knocks way worse on 87 than 93 Tbi was rebuilt 05/17/05
forgot to mention i am getting alot of pressure buildup in gastank and knock cant be reproduced with the car not moving... about the timing the only thing i have changed is the timing for the distributer. car seems a little on the rich side plugs look a little sooty

TBI engines base timing is 0, not 6. If you retarded it your running like 4 degrees retard, need to set it back. Means your plugs are firing after top dead center. If anything you should have advanced it, which would mean your plugs fire just before top dead center. TBI's generally like a few degrees advance. Reset your timing and maybe bump it up a couple degrees, then post back.
