Loss of power when full throtle.

Anyone know what will cause my car to suddenly lose all power when i'm gunning it? Ill reach around 70mph and all of a sudden the engine just goes dead. It will stay like that for 3-4 seconds and all of a sudden pull REALLY hard.

I have a lot more airflow in my new engine than I did with my old.. I havent re-jetted the carb either so im probably running pretty lean.. would that do it?

Thanks in advance =]

Only way to really tell is to put a fuel pressure gage at the carb and get a reading when it happens.
It sounds like fuel going away from the pickup during hard acceleration.
(surely you aren't running it with 1/8 of a tank of gas or less?)
If the carb needed rejetting the engine just wouldn't make full power not completely die.
Did the carb run fine on your previous setup?

you could be draining the carb bowl and running out of fuel. That would be my guess.

If the float bowl is empty, when it goes dead, it'll be momentarily, then it'll kinda stumble forward, as it's getting fuel trickling in. 3-4 seconds is kinda long.
It could be a very weak fuel pump, just fixed this problem on my setup (it was a weak fuel pump, and then a bent fuel pump pushrod).

Easy checks are air valve tension, and float level.

Yeah, I didnt have this problem with my old engine. Now that you guys mention it, it sounds culprit that its my fuel pump. I've got a crappy stock fuel pump on her. It happens regardless of how much fuel I have, even if its full. I'm scared to work on my carb, all I know is that its responsible for mixing atomized fuel with air and sending it down my intake manifold. I mean I know a little more about a carb than that, but thats the best way of describing my knowledge when dealing with them.

Ive got a bunch of new goodies on this engine, plus the engine itself is even bigger (357 as compaired to a 350) so its probably my fuel pump. I'll probably just end up buying a holley blue or something. I'll check out fuel pressure gauges later today after I pick up my paycheck.

Thanks =]

Yea, check the pressure first. I rigged up a T fitting with NPT fittings and hose and whatnot, using my vacuum gauge. Found 1psi at WOT, when it bogged. Just age kills the stock pump.

Isn't a holley blue an electric pump? A stock replacement would be best, I think it's a carter M6626 (I just did this last week). $26.

Hey, I just realized you live in Clinton Township, crazy I live in Harrison, this doesn't apply to this forum at all but its just nice to see someone here who lives so close. I just picked up an 82 trans am for $700 over on south river road, you may have even seen it! So after almost 2 years I'm back into the third gen world where I feel at home
