305 Worth it?

I noticed people saying you can get 400 HP out of a 305...(with no forced induction power adder) Like...Alum. Heads, Cam, Water Pump, Fuel pump, intake, carb, and roller rockers.

If thats true, I am going to mod up the 305. The 350 over the 305 is only like 40 HP. I really dont see what poeple hate about 305 engines. All i can think is that is the small *** Heads, but in the modding I would fix that.

Its possible, but usually not worth the trouble. I agree, when i first came to this site i learned to hate the 305, but its really not that bad of an engine. Its got plenty of grunt and ive won a few street races with it. HOWEVER, when you break it down, and you are trying to get brute power, a 305 just isnt worth the trouble. There are plenty of 350's around, lots of parts availible, and in the end there is no replacement for displacement. A 305 is basically just a really restricted 350, and the later 350s are just really low compression because of emissions laws. But i would think you can get more bang for your buck out of a 350, and more power for less money.

Well, a desent 350 will run me about 1.500 for a good HO...when I could get LOTS of mods for 1500. Probley pump more power...Its kind of like taking 2 steps forward and taking one back. I dont know anyone got any ideas? I willl probley be swaping but only because it has 258,000 miles on it ! If I had a,low milage, 305 I would build it up and race against 350s and see the differance...

I agree totally there is no reason to build a 305 if it needs a rebuild or bottom end. If you want all out power go with a 350. But if you have a decent 305 and want more power, just bolt some parts on and call it good. You can make a 305 pretty quick for cheap if you do it right. Again though a 305 is not bad but a 350 is better.

Look at what you wrote.
Slap yourself.
I have an idea... let's put $1500 in mods on a motor with 258000 miles.
C'mon... it doesn't matter whether or not you have a 305 or 350 that much money in a hunka junk is moronic.
It is time to get a rebuild anyways... and a 350 is usually cheaper than a 305. Why? 350's are a dime a dozen.... every one and their mom makes pistons for them... while the rods are the same and essentially the crank... you would basically have to get custom pistons if you want decent ones.

There is nothing wrong with a 305... if you want to be fast with a 305 it isn't hard. Just depends on how deep your pockets are. You will get there, quicker, cheaper, and happier... with a 350.

I bought my v6 camaro for $200, my freind bought a monte carlo for a derby race with a 3970010 motor. Nice tranny cooler, intake, headers, but the rest is stock (i beleive). It cost him $400. I put about $200 worth of wear and tear parts into the camaro. And another $100 to properly install the 350 and my 700R4. Grand total, $1000 from scratch, including 2 cars, 2 engines, 3 trannies, and wear and tear parts. Put $1500 into ur 305 and meet me at the strip, ill still beat you

Seriously though, you just gotta look in the right places. Better to get a 350 out of a truck, or an older sedan, rather than a camaro, or a monte carlo, or a corvette. Because the latter are usually used and abused. If you go to derbies, you can prolly pick up a nice running 350, fairly nicely tuned for less than $800 and drop it in.

Im going to be building up my 305, but thats because it's only got 95,000 on it. Also all the parts I am getting are bolt on for a 350 as well so when I need to swap, I can transpose all the parts right off. I do agree with the others though, 258k miles, swap it first, then build it up. My parts combo in a rough estimate will have 320rwhp on the 305, you can add about 40hp after the swap and even more torque.

If you could easily address the valve shrouding issues with the 305 it would be a real good engine. The problem with that is the actual bore (3.75) is the issue with a naturally aspirated 305 engine. The bore actually prevents the use of larger valves which reduces the potential for higher HP. Anyone making serious power with a 305 has forced induction, runs alot of juice or has never seen a dyno in real life and cannot back up their claims legitimately. If you mod a 305 just use parts that make power in the 305 butter zone idle-5K and you will not be disappointed.

the 327? you just opened up a whole another can of worms. Check out the STICKY in the engine swap section, and then come back. All the stuff that could probably be argued between the two engines IS in that thread. But they are both very nice engines.
