Tank/FP problem!

Hi,

I have a 92 TA TPI AUTO car and yesterday and couple more times before I've had a problem with driving it a bit harder and for 2-3 hour trips. Usually there is no problem with the car, but once I get on it and just drive it hard it would start smelling like gas around the back of the car, as well as my pump coming on and off almost whining.
I am thinking that there is a vent problem, and under stress it just does not vent as fast as it should thus making it leak out of the vent under the tank.

I have a vented gas cap and I had it a open a bit, but not all the way.
Should I drive with it open all the way to vent it, and just unplugg the canister???
Or do you think I have a more serious problem.

NOTE: I called few dealerships and there were no recalls on my particular vehicle.

Tank pressure is controled 2 ways:
A pressure comtrol/rollover valve in the sending unit (on top of the flange where all the lines pass into the tank - doubt that's the problem, the other is the charcoal canister in the engine bay. My '88 has a vacuum relief valve near the front-left side of tank not underneath it, but I think there's an upgrade for that when you get an OEM replacement pump because it's function was incorporated into the fuel vapor recircluation canister for environmental reasons.
Good luck.
