Starter nose cone broke? What did I do wrong now?

I went to start my car today, and it was normal, than it made a bad sound. I took the starter off, and it was in two peices. I don't know what could've caused this other than the fact that it was a shitty procomp starter. I bought a brand new ignition box from them and it didn't work, that's why I say they're shitty, yes I wired it right. The starter has had maybe 25 starts at the most, I haven't even put the car on the road yet since i've bought it. There was no shims with the other starter that I had on it, but that was an ac delco starter, I got rid of it because of the hot start problem. That's one thing the procomp starter was good for. It's a straight bolt pattern starter. Thanks any help is appreciated.

That has only ever happened to me once, and it was caused by a misalignment of the bolt holes in the block second hole was drilled crooked), causing too much stress on the starter. Try the delco starter with a heat shield.

I just realized one of the bolts was bent, I should've bought a new bolt. I bent it by accident, I thought it was too slight to do anything. Is the delco the best bang for the buck. One more thing i've seen starters that had a heat shield that just clipped on to the solenoid. I think it was a gm. Does this work well also? Thanks

It was the longer bolt also.
