Cam Size in my donor engine???
I have put a 350 from a 1981 3/4 ton Camper Special in my Camaro. It is block #14010207 with 462624 heads. Runs good until 4800 rpm or so. I am wondering how I can find out what cam is in it. I am doing up a set of 416's from my old 305 and am wondering if it would be worth my while to change the cam, too, or should I just add 1.6 rockers?

holy cow, that's one sleepy motor alright.
Nah, instead of the $150 to get the rockers, spend the $ on the cam and lifter kit. Probably timing chain too, since you're in there. And valve springs.
Maybe $220 total, if you play your cards right. If you settle on a summit cam, you can do it for much less.
That'll wake it up like crazy.

$220.00 total? Where are you buying your parts from?
Won't the cam alone be near that much, up here in Canada?
I like the numbers on the Comp XE268H, but Summit doesn't even list it.
This donor engine was a rebuilt, so chain and lifters should be good.
I will get new springs when I get the valves ground.
Should I use screw in rocker studs, or are pinned studs fine?
Should I change the 1.84 valves to 1.94 since it is going on a 350, or will the 1.84's be okay?

Check my info on the left, i'm in Cowtown. Actually, i'm one of the members on here usually calling BS when people quote unbelieveably low $ numbers, since we are blessed with high prices up here. Apeiron is my arch nemesis, always pointing out where/how to get stuff cheaper, and how i'm still paying more I want to.
ok, if you got a good chain then you're set. But no, you need new lifters with a new cam, (flat tappet), no exceptions, no matter how new they look, once they are used for 10 minutes, they're married to the lobes of that cam.
Summit has the xe268 (search for part number 12-242-2), I run that cam. You are right, it's a good match. I'll post my sig, you're doing a similar build to me. The cam is $110 on summit, sometimes on sale for $99. Jegs is same. When it hits your door it's about $130 Ca when the smoke clears. ok, closer to $145 maybe. I bought mine locally, for $130 on the nose. Look up Air_adam, he's in saskatoon I think, he'll know where you can buy parts there for a fair price. In fact, he's running 601 heads, might be able to give you some pointers on doing up the 305 heads. I paid $75 for lifters locally, crane.
Cam and lifters will set you back $200, CA, when you're sitting on your couch opening both boxes. I'm talking for a compxe series cam, and some comp/crane/whatever lifters. Throw in some gaskets and fluids, and that's say, another $50 (realistically).
Comp 981 springs are very good for your application. $80, drop in.
Getting the valves ground... you mean backcut, or something? (and/or new seats cut/ground into the heads eh?) 3 angles!
Go to 1.94 valves, and don't look back. Back cut them by hand if you like, that's what I did. I like the 1.94/1.5" setup on my motor.
You can use mr gasket pn76, I think it is, the non-collared studs. I used those, with a homemade stud pulling jig (which doubles to guide the tap). You can also pin your rocker studs, that would work just fine, and it's cheaper. It's a PITA to drill through that case hardened stud though, so I gave up and pulled them and used the tap.

You want to replace the valves with larger 350 sized valves 1.94"x 1.60" is just right. The stock 305 head valves will be history anyways. Select a cam according to your rear gearing converter stall speed and intended use.
You can get a good cam in Canada right from CTC or mail order from Canadian Hi-Performance Discount: serving the needs of automotive and performance enthusiasts or from the US thru Summit, Jegs or Competition Products. Competition Products all will ship to your door.
If using a stock converter keep the .050"duration below 218.
You will need new hyd lifters on a new cam reguardless of how good the old ones look.
drill and pin the rocker studs. use stock type hi perf replacement springs like Lunati 73943.

Hey F-bird, have you ever used canadian high performance? Sounds like a canadian summit (free shipping), sounds awesome to me. Kinda sounded like they had went out of business last time though, since their website wasn't updated in a while?

I'm right on the US border so I get a lot of my stuff from A local speed shop in the US. Or my trucker buddy picks stuff up at Summit in Georgia on the way home from Florida.
Sometimes CTC is very competitive on pricing.
Search competition products site for part#E1166K or #E922K complete cam kit with lifters, springs and seals+ locks for $129(US)
