Zero Oil pressure... but only sometimes...

listen here, always on cold startup it is reasonably normal, the guage i mean... wont spike the guage cold, so that automatically rings a bell...

but sometimes i can startup and it read zero, turn it off, read fine...

The car is solid lifter... so...

if i turely had zero oil pressure i'm sure it'd be hella audible...

what could be the problem? besides the obvious, sender or gauge... gonna install a mechanical to double check tomorow...

Basically it started today, was sitting with the heater on waiting for my boss, and the guage fell to zero, and wont spike anymore, at all... max it goes to is 35psi....

everytime i had a bearing fail or multible bearings fail, it would atleast pin the gauge, just not be fun doin it... am i right?

I had a piston stick inside the pressure relief valve of the oil pump once that did that. The oil pump was a high mileage original GM that I decided to use because it had served well in the past. I replaced the pump and when I took the old one apart the little piston had caught in a groove from a long time ago.

You got a new oil pump in there?

alright, a bud's car is starting todo the same thing. We basically made our motors exact twins... My oil pump ended up brekain off, the body broke in half...

His motor is having 5psi at warm idle, down from 30psi...

He changed the oil found a minute amount of silver...

2 days after he changed his oil, oil is still brand new looking on the stick... Not black.... what could that indicate?

I used the M55HV. It was a great unit but that was some years ago...

Sounds like an epidemic coming on...

u should probably look at your rebuild techniques, props for doing it yourself but did you guys wash the block when u got it back from the machine shop?

and you wouldnt know if the engine had 0 oil press for a while because theres already oil on the bearings so it lubricates it just enuf for it to run for a while. i swapped engines once and the new engine had 0 oil pressure but after driving around for about an hour and not noticing a difference it was obivously the sender and i ignored it from that point on.

he used same oil pump... mechanical gauge for him s showing he has 25psi when stock guage reads zero... so he's still fine... my $3400 short block on the other hand is not...
