Let's all build an engine - your help is needed

This post is for everybody who wants to contribute with some ideas re. building an engine.
Here's the plan:
Build an engine on a budget that will make about 350hp and about the same for torque on Regular gas.

Before you start saying I'm crazy read on, this thread is open to debate and any positive ideas and changes are allowed. I know some of the requirements below are not very realistic but work with me.

Requirements:
- budget: $2000US
- power: as close as possible to 350hp and 350lb/ft (these numbers are driven by the budget so if more is possible with the same money then it's even better)
- emission compliant
- regular gas
- fuel injected
- provisions for all accessories
- used in a daily driver that you can have fun with

My initial plan was to get an engine from a scrap yard and rebuild it myself but the more I think and read about it the more confused I am.
At some point I was thinking about an LT1 swap but the money for this is an issue, if you have any ideas that would allow an LT1 swap with this budget then feel free to share them here.

So I guess first step would be to decide if the LT1 is the way to go. Once a decision is made around the engine generation it would be parts selection and mods, think of it like this: if I had to build this engine from scratch what would be the very first part to choose so I can build the rest of the engine around it (eg. cam, block, heads, etc), do I pick the cam first and then the rest of the parts will have to match the cam?

Once the majority agrees on a part it will be added to the list and eventually we will have a complete parts and mods list.

I'm not sure how the thread poll works but I'll try to have one for all the parts/suggestions.

I hope this thread will grow and all people looking for build ideas can use our debates/suggestions.

Get on your firesuit, and get ready for a sh*&^^ storm....

Alright, off the top of my head, ditch the injection idea, go carb, and go 383.

That's about as close as you can get on budget. I think it's doable, if you can get some stuff used, and do everything yourself.

No hope in heck of getting that power, and under budget, for the other options (now that's a bold statement, ready for arguement, but here in the real world, it's not possible. ie, assuming you don't find a used LT1 for $300 in great shape, and are good friends with a world class machinist, and other BS assumptions that magazines use to build high HP motors for dirt cheap).

I'm not even going to subscribe to this thread, since I don't want to debate, and reinvent the wheel again and again...
