tach bounce, surging

well, i drove from virginia to california for the military, car ran fine for the first 2 days. from then on it ran like garbage. after cruising down the highway for a bit the tach would bounce around and it would stumble. i would stop and shut the car off, then restart it and it would run fine for another 20-30 minutes. when cruising through small towns, when decelerating to a stop the tach would bounce around and it would cut off.

code 42 was being thrown inbtermittently

thanks in advance for help guys
