Would this be a good block to start with?

I found a 2nd gen block, already cleaned and bored .030 over for a little over 500 bucks? Would this be a good block to build 650hp on, or should I stay away?

It would be, but $500 + shipping is kind of expensive.

But all machine work is complete.

No particular red flags. Great feedback rating for 8500+. One usually doesn't expect finish honing on the cylinders until you have the pistons in hand, but with better quality control, that isn't so bad these days.

Were you going to build a "conventional" Gen I 383, or an LT1?

Why not get a whole 383 shortblock from them while you're at it and save some shipping?

I paid about $250 for my 4 bolt with all machine work done. I did have to clearance the block myself. I paid $50 for the block from one of the members here that I drove 50 miles to pick up and took it to my machine shop. I spent a total of $300 but never had the block decked. I had it overbored, honed, hot tanked before and after, new freeze plugs and cam bearings put in, and had the mains line honed.

All that is likely going to be much more expensive to have done in Germany.

One could argue that it might make sense to wait until back in PA, of course. . .

Roller, non LT1. Little over $600 shipped to your door. If I could find a block for $50............as for having them build a shortblock for me...I need a complete forged assembly. Planning on building a blown 670hp motor. They want 2k for a block that will handle 500.
Im planning on a 4130 crank, I-beam rods and some forged pistons. Total parts are roughly 1200 bucks.....plus timing gears, chain, cover, flywheel, oil pan, oil pump, balancer, and to be balanced...whats that, 800 bucks? Then to have the crank and rods installed for me (I dont want to take any chances doing it myself), whats that come out to. $22-2300? Most shortblocks I find that are forged are over 3k. Maybe I'm missing something???Feel free to inform me!

Yep, waiting for PA. Be there in two months! Finished my term!

Okay, this is a coming-home project.

Since there is a lot you want done for you, have you contacted these people about building exactly what you want?

No, I'm still getting my thoughts together. If I can find a good shop back home, I'd rather give them my money. I want this project to get started as soon as I get home though, so I would like a couple good sources. I will shoot them an email though. I'm sure theres a stock car engine builder somewhere around my area......
