Wont start!

Well I bought my car a few months ago in a non running condition. The carb was missing along with a battery and a few other parts. Once I got all new stuff I went to go turn it over and the starter was grinding, so I went out and bought a new reman. starter. I installed it with all the shims that the other one had and went to go fire it up. It ran for a little bit(ran outta gas). Then I went to go start it again and it just grinds not like the starter grinding but like the starter and the flywheel can someone help me? I even tried taking the shims out but to no avail. Right now I have one shim in but I havent tried starting it. Am I better off getting it professionally fixed or doing it myself and experimenting with shims?

What year is the block (Casting number)? The next time you have the starter removed, take a close look at the outboard starter mounting hole. Does the casting appear damaged in that area? Is there very little material around the hole?

The starter holes are fine. I'm not sure on the engine numbers. I tried looking everywhere on the back of the block for them and I couldnt find them.

You may want to check the condition of the teeth on your flywheel, could be that when you initially started it the flywheel was in a position where the teeth were good, now it's in a place where they're not? To check this the easy way, manually turn over your engine with a socket on the middle bolt on your crank pulley and use a breaker bar, try intermittently starting it at different positions.

The teeth on the flywheel look fine but I'm not an expert so I dont know, this mystery has been going on for about 3 months now.
