valve seals/gaskets
I bought a gasket kit. I'm slowly but surely replacing gaskets. Just to keep my car up to date and maintained since the previous owners did not.
I still have to do the intake manifold gaskets. Anything i need to know or should be aware of or any do's and don'ts????
Should i use gasket sealer or is there a risk it will leak into a spot i dont want it to? Can i just rely on placing the gaskets in?
I know the sealer dries quickly n hardens but i don't want to use too much and have it leak over into an area i do not want to clog.
Just any tips or suggestions please.
Thanks

Read up on how to remove and reinstall the distributor and set it back in time.
Too many people have problems after they pull the distributor, spin the motor, and realize they have no clue how to put it back in time.
Modern gaskets are high tech. The reason they say don't add sealant is because they have already incorporated this into the gasket and adding it will only add to clogging of the oil pump pickup and radiator.
You do have to put a dab of silicone at the 4 corners where the intake meets the block. It's in all the instructions.
What they don't emphasize enough is surface prep. The mating surfaces have to be cleaned down to bright shiny metal. Most folks think this means scraping the big stuff off with a paint scraper. Us pros use a "scotch-brite" pad on a die grinder.
It's ok to add a small amount of gasket sealer to almost any gasket. EXCEPT steel shim head gaskets. A long technical explanation will show how the extra sealant will cause a problem where one wouldn't exist.
One more tip: If people in Alabama have sucessfully done it, it can't be that hard.
