081 heads or 083 heads?
Hey everyone,
Im planning on building myself a mild 350 engine, and im stuck on what heads to use.
My goal is to get 300flywheel hp, with hypereutectic pistons, fully refresh the engine, ill have to pick out a cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, springs etc.
My question is:
Which heads would be best on a 350 that will retain the 4.000 bore, but have flat top pistons?
Which will port easiest?
Which flow the best?
My second question, is about how much would it cost to have them machined to accept a wider springs and possibly screw in studs?
Thanks for the help!
Sheldon

They are virtually identical, except the 083's have the 64cc chambers, while 081's have the 58cc chambers.
Porting, opening up spring pockets, etc, will be the same. The 081's have 1.84" intake valves, while the 083's start with 1.94" valves. You can always upgrade the 081's to 1.94" valves though.
Base your choice on:
-With flat tops, 4.00" bore, and the deck height that you'll have, which chamber will give the desired CR?
-Can either be modified to be a different CR? (The answer there is yes, if you want 60cc, you can open up the 081's, but you can't close up the 083's...
-Which are easier/cheaper to obtain? (I'll give you a hint, there are more 305 TPI motors out there than 350 TPI cars...)

ah. It'll probably be the 083's then. Larger valves stock, and they'll probably give you the right CR. Might want to deck the block.
