Greetings from chilly England...
Just imported an 88 GTA with LB9 5.0 litre V8..
Anyone able to tell me the location of the engine number?
(needed to register it)

I'm assuming you're looking for the VIN number.
If so, it' located at the bottom of the windshield on the drivers side.

If the block has ever been decked, those numbers will be gone. The serial number on the block will be the last 9 digits of the original vehicle's serial number. If it doesn't match the car's VIN, then the engine has been replaced. The "design" number in the above picture is a code which can tell exactly what kind of vehicle the engine came out of. The above picture tells me the block was cast in the Tonawanga engine plant on August 10. Hard to read the middle digit but it looks like CMR. There's 3 different listings for CMR.
It could be a 1978 L82 350 from an Vette or Z28 or it could be 1974 350 from an A-body or it could be a 1980 LG4 305.
Those numbers are only good if you want to know the history of the engine in the car. As I first mentioned, getting the block decked will remove those numbers then any number sequence can be restamped into the block.
Not sure what the UK does but registering a vehicle normally means the vehicle VIN number that's found in the bottom corner of the windshield. The number is found all over the car. It should be on a decal on the door frame. It will be on the RPO decal in the center console compartment. There's also VIN decals inside panels all over the car. I've found decals on the insides of my rear fenders. There was also one under the plastic cover on the rear hatch.
Anyone wishing to change the metal VIN tag on the dash to hide a stolen car needs to know where all the VIN decals are. I'd be suspicious if all the other decals were removed or altered. If the engine looks original, you could even compare the VIN number on it to the car's.
