Prom Chip Problems
I have a 1983 Pontiac Firebird Transam. Recently car starting acting up & took it in. Mechanic told me that the Prom Chip 4551 needs to be replaced. Not sure how to locate one. Anyone with any information would be greatly apprecciated. Don't have tools to burn the prom myself, otherwise I would. Once again, any information would be greatly apprecciated.

your computer should be behind the pass. side of the dash on the dash support. I think you have to take off that lower dash panel and lower cover to get to it. Should have 2 10mm screws holding it to the support. take them loose and unplug the wiring harness. Then there is a cover with 2 I believe 7mm screws take those out and the panel and you will see the prom.

Chips don't just go "bad" unless you are getting an SES code which indicates a bad eprom. If you are not getting any SES codes, then you have a different problem and getting a new eprom will be a waste of money.
As you have more of "General" technical problem, I will move this to the Tech/Board.
