belt squeel
belt squeel
I replaced my alternator belt and i can't get rid of the squeel when it is turning.
I have tightened it and made it looser but i can't stop it.
Just when i think i have it tight enough to stop it works fine for awhile and then it's back.
I made it too tight once and the alternator got hot, so now i have it with just a little deflection and it worked fine for a few days but nows its like a stuck pig.

try some "belt dressing".. but it is supposed to stop squeeking when you tighten it.. try tightening it till the noise stops.. deflection should be no more than about 3/8" with a nice pressure.. if it doesnt help, get the belt dressing stuff..

Sometimes the pulley's themselves wear overtime and the belt will not contact the pulley properly and will not stay tight and squeal.
Thanks today i went out and tried once more to tighten it and stop the squeek, it's ok for now but i'll see how long it lasts.
what is in the belt dressing that stops squeeks?
I'm sure it's not the alt squeeling, it's definetly the belt slipping.

Also try this; take the belt off and lightly sand the pulley grooves where the belt has been riding on the pulley.
I learned this working on large diesels and it works great on cars. Before the belt goes bad and you change it out it gets really greasy. It "burns" this rubber from the old belt onto the pulleys and then then new belt never gets to have a good grip and starts to slip. It only costs whatever one piece of sandpaper in any grit will cost you. Just take the time to do all of the pulleys where that one belt rode (one groove on each different pulley) and you will be good to go. It doesn't take that long and you don't have to take the pulleys off. Just stick your arm down there and scratch it up some. You'll be happy, I promise!

also if you are in temps below say 50F then you should try getting the motor warm before ttightening the belt as when it is cold it makes the rubber stiff

sanding the pulleys where the V-belt rides is a good ideal, you may want to put a new belt on when you do it if the old one has been on very long & has any signs of glazing.
i hate belt dressing, it makes everything it gets on sticky & it holds dirt, i have also had it cause as much belt squeak as the squeal it stops.
something that i have found that works better & lasts at least as long is hand cleaner that has grit in it. GO JO & GOOP don't work. the ZEP green hand cleaner works great if you can find, Fast Orange with grit also seems to work ok.
with the motor off, smear some cleaner around the belt in a few different places & put some on the pulleys & then start the motor up. don't stand in line with the belts or you'll get a nice spray of hand cleaner. there is no need to wash it off the belts. normally one application is enough, but sometimes you may need to do it a second time.
also, this is the only thing i have found that stops belt squeal or squeak thats caused by getting antifreeze on the belts.
i thought i would add this for people who have serpentine belts. when you replace the old belt, with a clean wire brush clean the grooves all the way around each pulley to remove any dirt that may be trapped in the grooves. a few passes in the grooves with a scotch brite pad after using the wire brush wouldn't hurt, just make sure you clean the grooves again after using the scotch brite pad.
