LT1 Crank Snout Keypin or NOT
LT1 Crank Snout Keypin or NOT
I have done a serch and read about the LT1 crank snout keypin, everything I have read states that the LT1's did not have a keypin. Well when I went out to put my HUB onto the crank I noticed that there is a keypin on my crank. I know its a LT1 I ran the block numbers and it is a 96 LT1. I am now concerned about the crank......here is some pics of the crank snout, is this the way it should look???????

It wont hurt anything if it's not supposed to be there. Have a look at the inside of the hub. If there is a groove to accept the key then it needs to be installed. The LT1 crank is compatable with any other 1 piece seal crank. If the LT1 hub has no key way then chances are that it was rebuilt using an older crank which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
So, how can i tell what crank was used and what should I do about the crank? Shoud I replace the crank or get a hub that matchs the crank??? Teh HUB DOES NOT have the slot for the key......thanks....

I've never personally seen an LT1 without the key but I suppose anything is possible. Without it there is nothing to stop the hub/balancer from spinning on the crank.
Heres a pic I found on my computer from a while ago. Factory LT1 with a keyway.
