Gas tank leak...

It seems I have a fairly large leak from my filler neck that drips gas out only when I fill it up all the way. But... I get very poor fuel econonmy because I'm guessing it all just evaporates away over time. I also noticed for a 350 it seems to be lacking some pep. Whenever I take my non vented gas cap off, there is no pressure release like in my brother's and friend's third gen. So...Does the leak cause a lack of fuel pressure therefore sucking performance away? Another question, if i'm going in to put in a new tank, should I replace the fuel pump? It has about 110,000 miles on it, and I'm guessing it has never been replaced.

Re: Gas tank leak...

i would recommend replacing the pump when you have the tank out, its too much work to have to drop the tank again a few months later.

the tank leak should not affect how the motor runs unless your getting water in the gas.
bad mileage & low performance means there is a problem, start with checking the basics like timing, air filter, pull codes, ignition coil output & fuel pressure.

Re: Gas tank leak...

Yeah I suppose with the tank already out... And I have checked the basic stuff, although the fuel pressure I'm not too sure. But with the timing, I'm just going to quick throw this in. I checked it with the computer disconnected and it showed 0 degrees. With it hooked back up it behaved normal adjusting itself. I'm wondering because I don't have problems with knocking, if I crank up the base timing, could I notice an increase in performace?

Re: Gas tank leak...

These cars were recalled for the leaking gas tank. Take it to the dealer, the recall is still valid, if your is one of the eligible ones (I don't know exactly which ones are or aren't) they are required BY LAW to replace it for you.

Your stock timing spec is 6° advanced with the wire disconnected. Set it correctly and see if it runs better. If it does, try advancing it further in small increments like 2° at a time, and see what happens.
