Hey Just a couple questions for you guys. I got a 1988 Camaro with a 305 dropped in it and its having a few problems. It bogs when i try to take off really fast and stall out, and it backfires through the carb sometimes too. When i had it up to highway speed and tromp it it will backfire through the Carb too, when its bogging i can realease the gas pedal just a bit and it will gain speed. The timing does need to be advanced though it idles too low and i have to take her slow until its fixed.

Is that a timing issue or is the carb tuned too high?

oh and the I failed the e test because of high HC

 

well there you go either you failed the test cause the car is running rich or a bad cat... how many ppm were you over?

 

Probably both.
Get a timing light and get it set up right. Is this a non-cc q-jet or a cc-qjet? Got the matching distributor?

Set up your timing to spec, then play with the carb. Always do the timing first, you can get that into the ballpark flying blind, (ie, most SBC's will be in the same area) but the carb - you need to have the timing right first or you'll just be chasing your tail.
