Ignition Failure
This may have been covered at one time, so I appologize ahead of time but I haven't seen any listing for it. I've got an '86 Trans Am WS6 with the 5.0 TPI. Recently running then suddenly the car shuts off like a switch was thrown and it won't start again (first thought was fuel pump), negative on that one fuel pump in fine working order. Do some checking and I find that I have no spark what so ever going to the engine. Check the dist. cap, all is good, went ahead and replaced the ignition coil thinking that might be the culprit...nothing (although the coil hadn't been touched since '86 according the my service records which include EVERYTHING the previous 2 owners ever did to it...I have receipts for wipers blades going back to the fall of '86...I digress)
Still no spark. Checked for timing chain failure...all is well and spining as it should. New ECM was installed late last year as well as a new throttle position sensor, so I looked about those areas for anything loose or damaged.
Anyway ideas of what I should be checking now? The engine turns over easily, fuel can be smelled, but no spark to any plug wires.
Most of my experience is with older autos (pre-fuel injection) so I'm lacking some knowledge of thier ignition systems.
Basically I'm looking for a laundry list of things to check that I might not have though of.
Thanks,
Corey
