Ive had a string of failures with the OEM replacement modules from BWD, accel, etc. I had the insulation on the ignition coil fail and allow the spark to leak to the primary, which I thought was the cause originally, but I just had another module fail the same way. Each time, the car will run fine right beforehand, but then just fail to restart after it has sat. Basically when cranking, there will be no reference pulses at all and the tach is dead.

Any ideas as to what this could be? Maybe voltage spikes? I havent had any apparent electrical issues and everything is grounded properly.

 

Are the leads on the pickup coil clean and in good shape? You might double check the grounds for any resistance over a couple ohms.

 

I cleaned all the grounds and the dist base and clamp as well as checked all the connections. So far, I havnt found any issues.

 

Original GM are the only ones we have found that will last and perform correctly. Aftermarket seem to die. My parts store only sells GM ones now because of all the returns.

 

Ive tried to get the AC Delco ones locally, but have had no sucess. I might just order one and be done with it.

 

I've read the same thing on many other Forums too. Go GM is my advice and don't forget to use the goop that comes with the new one.

For Vettes, the coil and pickup coil have to match too. When I did some research on this a few years ago, best I could come up with is it's a polarity issue. I know ACCEL mentions it about their stuff; not sure about other coil though, like MSD, etc.

Don't forget the metal ground strap under the coil cap too.
