Years for electronic speedo?

What years did the Camaro and Firebird switch from a cable-driven speedo to a VSS-driven one? I know the Firebird was earlier, but I can't remember the exact years. For the Camaro, was it when they switched the dash layout to the new style? Or was it earlier?

Re: Years for electronic speedo?

When did the Firebird switch? I have an 88 someone swapped in a TH350 before I bought it. I can't find the cable or any wires.

I "believe" the electonic speedos in Firebirds started in 86 (but I'm a Camaro guy).

Re: Years for electronic speedo?

Assuming my 88 Trans Am should have an electric one, I need to find the wire. Does anyone know what color(s), and also if it was routed down from the firewall or somewhere else? What parts do I need for the transmission to send it a signal?

Yes, it was 1986 for the birds. Dont know wire color, but its going to run from the speedo to the VSS buffer attached to the bracket for the ECM on the passenger side. I cant remember if the wiring from the VSS on the trans goes through the tunnel or joins the engine wiring harness.

Re: Years for electronic speedo?

I can't be the first one to go through this, switching to a carbed engine and TH350. I will do a search. Thanks.
