KILLS

So, I have a stock 92 RS 305 TBI. I know the motor blows royally, but what types of cars could I beat? Could I beat cavaliers? sunfires? stock civics? A list would be cool, lol.

I plan on getting headers, open air cleaner, cold air intake, and full exhaust. How much of a horsepower gain will I be seeing?

And what would it take to be able to beat a 94-02 Mustang, and even the GT?

I wont mess with the cobras right now..lol.

Thanks.

Re: KILLS

Well first off, there is nothing wrong with the motor you have....You will learn what to mess with, and what not to mess with...Never let them know your weak spots...LOL....Not a day goes by that someone does not want to mess with my car...Those shopping cart looking imports always make a bunch of noise when they see me....If I know they can beat me for sure, I just leave it to their imagination as to how quick my car is.....Mine looks alot faster than it is.......

Re: KILLS

Groan. If you need to ask if you can beat a cavalier or a sunfire it's time to put down the keyboard and get your wrenches. That's just plain sad.
This is the type of post that belongs on the "theoretical / street racing board". It's all about bench racing.

Your mods should net you 20-30HP with full exhaust and a cold air intake. Lots of other good modifications to a TBI motor, check the TBI forum, probably a sticky there too. After you're done you don't have to shame yourself (and us) by asking if you can beat a stock civic. Shudder.

Re: KILLS

I get what your saying. Im not talking about them having more hp than me though. given i only have 170, its more than them. Im worried about acceleration though in those cases. They are lighter. And my car is slow.

Re: KILLS

I have a 87 T/A with 305 4BBL. It is in very good shape and motor runs strong. The other night I was much surprised that these guys in a Ford Supercrew DIESEL wanted to me to get on it. I did. I stomped it and went to look in my rearview to see how far behind they were. They weren't. They were beside me. They looked as surprised to see me beside them as I was to see them beside me. We stayed neck and neck until about 60MPH and we both let off at the same time. It whistled real loud so I suppose it had a turbo, but it was a DIESEL!!! Now I'm scared to run against a moped!

Re: KILLS

If you want to know what you can beat go out and race them. If you lose just tell them that all you have is a stock wornout 305 and move on.

Don't feel too bad about that, man. The newer generation of turbo diesel motors are all very impressive. Yes, they have a very short powerband, but most of the new ones are pushing around 300 hp (at least) and around 600 lb-ft of torque. A full size Chevy with a Duramax diesel with computer tuning would beat a lot of stock 3rd gens. There are a lot of turbo diesels at the track I run at down here, and most have only computer tuning done and run between mid 14s and mid 15s in the quarter mile, which isn't bad at all for a superduty truck.

So I guess what I'm saying is that it's not that your car is all that slow. It's that a new Ford PowerStroke isn't all that slow. Just because it's a diesel doesn't mean it's in the same league as a school bus. There are modified full size diesels out there running 12s and lower.

Re: KILLS

yeah big trucks can put out som serious power so dont be suprised if they can hang with a beat old 305.

and heck my car is slow if i had to guess i would say like 150hp and like 3600lbs does not equate to a fast moveing object. but you can always say look i can do a burnout.

Before you race anyone, you should make sure you motor is in good tune. Which with a L03 is basically limited to doing a full tune up (if needed) and giving your ignition timing about 4 to 6 degrees advance past TDC. If you don't know how do this stuff, do some searching and learn. Your motor may seem to "royally blow", but you can make it scream just like pretty much anything else. Like any motor ever, you simply have to know how to build it. There are some fast 305s on this board, despite what people may tell you, lol.

Cavaliers\Sunfires that are older than about 2002 you should do pretty well against. 2002 and newer Cavaliers\Sunfires have Ecotec motors and will probably give you a good race or beat you unless you've done some work on your car already.

Because Civics can come with a decent variety of motors, this one isn't easy to answer. If it's a newer Civic and it's an Si, it will probably beat you. It might put several cars on you if it's a brand new Si.

As far as like a comprehensive list, you need to do some research. Your car in stock form runs mid 15s at best. From there, it's a matter of figuring out what other cars run, which isn't really too hard.

In general, you probably shouldn't get too worked up about street racing until you've either done some work with your motor or got a different motor in there. There's a fine line between being brave racing faster cars with a 170hp V8, and looking like an idiot (or is there even a line?).
