install valve seals, cost?

he i was just wondering how much it would cost for a shop to install new valve seals on my motor and about how long it will take? i bought the valve seals and was planning on putting them on my other heads and swaping the whole assembly on but i think i'm just gonna stick with my current heads. i've been putting it off for a while but its gotta get done soon and i dont have any free time so it looks like a job for the shop. i wouldnt imagine it to cost that much right? you only need to pop the valve covers off and pull the springs to get to em right?

well you normaly take the heads off to do it coz if you dont when you remove the springs the valve would drop.

I don't think shops normally pull the heads to do valve seals. Most shops would just do the job, then check their big black book for the "normal" amount of time to do it, then multiply that by the shop rate. If you already have the parts, i'd guess $200-300. You can keep the valves from dropping by filling the cylinder with some rope, or by rotating the engine over until the piston is at TDC, or by filling the cylinder with compressed air. Either way, it is a job you can do at home, it'd take about 3-4hrs and save you a few hundred bucks. I prefer to save money, so that's the route i'd take

if the shop is flat rate, which most are, according to alldata, it pays 5.3 hours plus parts.

hum i hope i can get it done for around 200 bucks. and i assumed they just use compressed air in the cylinders. if i had the nessicary tools and the time i would do it but i'm on a tight schedule so i think i'll call around to a few shops tommarrow to see if i can get a good price

There is a lot of stuff that has to be removed in order to get to the valve covers. Then pump the cylinders up as described, which requires removing the spark plugs. Popping off each valve spring is time consuming. Then put it back together and readjust the valves.

5.3 hours doesn't sound at all out of line. I doubt you're going to find a shop that charges less than $40/hour.
