Bad MAF?
Bad MAF?
I took my car into the dealership to check something out with the starter, they fixed that, but also told me they found out that my MAF was bad and it would be $700 just for the part to fix it.
My question is, what are the repercussions of having a bad MAF? And is it really going to cost $700+ to get this fixed or is there a cheaper route?

dude dont go back there, you can get a new MAF and put it in with only a flat head screwdriver for $70. you can get on at advanced or auto zone or napa. very very easy to install. and is the car misfirring or anything or did they just say it was bad, casue they are just trying to screw you over. the dealership is not out to screw you. their business depends on their word. if you dont trust a diagnosis, ask the technician to show you whats wrong and explain it; thats their job. feel free to go over the service writer if he/she gives you trouble, ask to speak to someone in charge. Service writers are paid on comission, they do just about all the "screwing over" that you may hear about. i can imagine the part being fairly expensive if its an OEM part.

its a a relativly non expensive part but when someone charges u 700$ for a 150$ part that can be replaced in 3 min with a flat head screw driver.....is screwing you. a grannelli high flow MAF with the newest most accurate electronics runs u 300 brand new. so even that there charging u 400$ installation hahaha how could u not see that as screwing u, a rebuilt MAf from any part store whether it bs OEM or w/e are cheaper than the grannellis

Re: Bad MAF?
$400 is an expensive diagnosis for a faulty MAF. That should be determined in less than an hour based on the customer's explanation of the problem.

Re: Bad MAF?
I dont see the poster talking about diagnostic fees... which shouldnt be more than an hour book time anyway.
$700 is way high. I dont think the OE part even retails for that much unless you arent in the US. And I'll bet the diagnosis is faulty, I lost count how many times the dealer told me I had a bad MAF. Or my 85 that had a bad MAF replaced like 8 times before they decided to replace the MAF module and fix the problem.

Re: Bad MAF?
I DO!! Thats because you can test your maf in a matter of seconds to see if its bad, and yes I have tested this on my car when my maf was bad (car needs to be running) Take a screwdriver and tap the MAF with the plastic screwdriver handle, if the engine stumbles then your in need of a new maf, if no change then your maf is fine.
