Manual transmission difficulties

Hi have an '89 Camaro RS with a T-5 manual. I took the 305 TBI motor out and have a 350 (2 piece rear main style) that I just put in the car. My problem is this:-The old flywheel won't fit on the engine because the org. engine was 1 piece sealSo I got a 350 flywheel and pressure plate and clutch but the clutch is for a 14 spline and I need a 26 spline. My question is this... Should I put the old clutch which is 10.4" on a flywheel that is 13.25" or will that just smoke the clutch too easily. The reason why I am thinking about this is because I can't afford a larger clutch with 26 splines. They want $200+ for them. The 350 engine is very mildly built and will be used for street driving (if the gas prices ever go down).Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

It is lower 100s for the small clutch and pressure plate, but I have the big flywheel needing the big pressure plate and larger clutch. I have everything except large clutch. Do you think the small 10.4" clutch will work with the larger 13.25" flywheel/pressure plate? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the larger flywheel won't fit in the T5 bellhousing.
I think you need the smaller flywheel, smaller clutch, and 305 starter bolt style (inline).

You are right, the larger flywheel does not fit into that stock 305 bellhousing. I found that out the hard way. I now have a larger bell housing. What I will probably end up doing is just finding a 305 flywheel that was from an older 2-piece seal motor and use my other clutch and pressure plate. Thanks.

Re: Manual transmission difficulties

Yea, i'm also fairly sure the larger bellhousing doesn't fit into our tiny 3rd gen tranny tunnels.
You used the 153 tooth stuff on your T10 with the 400 block right?

But yea, a 305 flywheel is fairly inexpensive. Remember the starter part too, you'll need the 305 style inline bolt pattern starter for the 153 tooth flywheel.

Re: Manual transmission difficulties

I had to get the larger bellhousing for my T-10 when I did the 400 small block swap. The 168 tooth flywheel was the only externally balanced flywheel I could find at the time. The bellhousing did fit in the tunnel, but with very little room to spare. I think I may begin my search for a 153 tooth flywheel. Thanks for the starter reminder. I'm pretty sure i've got a 305 starter laying around somewhere.

Re: Manual transmission difficulties

Btw, you can't use the larger bellhousing with the T5 anyways since it mounts the tranny straight up, and the correct T5 bellhousing for a thirdgen car mounts the tranny at an angle. I have the flywheel you need in decent shape out in the garage. Pulled it off a 83 Camaro with a 305/T5. If you're interested, just PM me. Oh yeah, I also have the starter motor from the same car.
