Distributor Shaft Bushings
Does anybody know where I can find the upper busing to a small cap HEI?? I jsut bought a used one and in the process of cleaning it up discovered that the upper bushing is bad. there was so much crap in the housing that I dont think the upper bushing got lubricated. When I got the bushing out it pretty much crumbled. I know somebody out there has to know a part number or source... Anybody??

Upper bushing?
Sorry, i'm a little confused, didn't think a bushing was used on that at all. I'm just tagging on to this thread to learn.

You never cease to amaze me Apeiron. You've got a truly incredible amount of useful spec sheets on your computer
So now i'm curious, which is the upper bushing?

Sonix, there are 2 bushing in the dist housing right at the ends, 1 upper & 1 lower.
they are not shown in the diagram Apeiron posted.
they are both bronze if im not mistaken.
dv8, you may be able to find a set from a parts house, not a place like auto zone, but what all parts houses used to be like years ago.
other places to check are places that sells bearings, look in the phone book. also, a shop that specializes in rebuilding starters & alternators, not a general auto repair shop.
if you find a place like that, you probably need to take the housing & shaft with you so they can match it up.
you may be better off just getting a reman dist in the long run.

Re: Distributor Shaft Bushings
no luck today. I can have one made but the problem is that the upper bushing came out in pieces and I have nothing to measure to have one made. I even called a place in Mempfis TN that rebuilds distributors and he would tell me what i needed. but he did offer to have me send it to him to fix
. I'll keep trying. Anybody got anymore ideas/info??

Is there any difference in the small cap hei units?? will the the truck/van dizzies work. I would just need to swap out the modules right?? I think they should all be interchangable, the moron at pep boys ( i was calling bout the bushing) told me i could not swap them. I doesnt sound right.

Junkyard. Pop the bushing out the same way your original one came out (by driving it out with the aid of all the oil schmutz that coats the distributor shaft) and install it in your distributor.
I hate yanking distributor shafts from old distributors for that reason- they always end up driving out the upper busing becuase of the crap that builds up on the shaft. But you end up with a nice collection of upper distributor shaft bushings in the process!
A parts store SHOULD carry them, but good luck fining a parts store that carries them and knows how to find them.
