What is inside an AC system that I should worry about when removing it?

I have a pulley and my AC system is going to be getting the boot very soon, but I'm worried that when I rip this stuff out whatever is inside is going to spray/leak out and potentially cause some form of harm. So what is the deal with this project? I was unable to find anything about it.

Bring it to an ac shop and have it evacuated. Depending on whether or not it is pure freon, they won't charge you. They can make a bundle reselling the stuff.

Freon isn't som much dangerous for you as it is horrible for the environment.
