Re: 2 camaros that wont start after being driven
your problem sorta sounds like heat soak... or a faulty starter/batter/alt but as you have changed those i would go with heat soak where the starter gets to hot and wont turn the engine... you could try some heat shielding around the starter... but check the ground and power from the battery too

it was the plug that goes into the alternator. that ***** was loose. i found out after the alternator went bad because of that plug. i had just replaced it too. luckily i had a warranty.

nope. i guess that loose plug just made it hot. wither the laternator or the starter. i would just wait like an hour and it kick up like nothin. the clip was broke on the plug for the alternator. i guess it was a bad ground.

Re: 2 camaros that wont start after being driven
i don't know how this would apply to the efi, but my 68 chevelle had the EXACT problem you are having. would start cold NO PROBLEM... as soon as it was warm, it wouldn't start... starter could barely turn the engine over. turns out for me, it was the vaccum advance unit being frozen. when cold, the timing was dead on, but as the engine warmed up, the advance couldn't move, thusly it was incorrect for the warm startup conditions. could any particular sensor or issue cause this scenario to occur with the efi systems?
i also tried all the heat shielding, etc and it did nothing in that scenario either. i know its a very different car, but i just had to mention it because its the exact same set of symptoms. that, and i have had 3 different thirdgens, all with manifolds, then headers and have never had a heat related starting issue.

Re: 2 camaros that wont start after being driven
there are a few things that could cause this
1 being heat soak... give your starter a feel when it wont start... did you burn yourself or what?
2 bad ground that would be more of a eratic condition
3 combo bad ignition module/heatsoak/ground
so start checking things

good call... ignition module would be very affected by heat, and would cause something like what u are dealing with. 35 dollars and about 25 minutes to replace... not a bad thing to just swap out. especially if its old.

Good advice, get a heat-shield for the starter & solenoid and check or replace the module. Summit will have both and their price is probably the cheapest. Check your connections !

ive heard you could put a smaller gear reduction starter and it will help on the heat soak. summit sells it, though its a bit pricey compared to the stock starter.

i had the same problem was my 86 305 z28. it ended up being the battery cable running to the starter. peel the cover back by the battery check the color of the wire. if there is any green on the wire replace it. it should look like copper like a penny.

Re: 2 camaros that wont start after being driven
he's right. logically, it can't be heat soak, not with a factory exhaust and a brand new starter. if it were timing, the starter would be pushing very hard, and would jump on the flywheel (been there, seen that), and he didn't mention that it was jumping. so basically its a current flow issue. cheap to replace/fix. replace both the primary ground line and the primary power to starter line. make sure your battery contacts are very clean. good call 89N10GTA

My `88 383 TPI also cranks slow only when hot, 15 minutes or less of shut off. Stock exhaust, recent tune-up, always done this.
