Leaking Oil, need help.

I finally figured out why my '86 Camaro was over heating. The heater core leaked and I bypassed it. Looks like too much coolant was going through the bypass instead of the radiator.
Here is the problem, while fixing that I unhooked the vacuum line to the PCV valve and forgot to hook it back up. Took it for a drive and noticed smoke following me. Checked it out and there was oil blowing out the two accessory holes on the passenger side next to the water pump. I haven't seen that before. Apparently the crankcase pressurized and sent oil out those two holes.

Questions:
Should that have happened?
I plugged them with two bolts about 1.5 inches long, how long of a bolt can I use before I hit something that will break inside the engine? I have not started her up again, lost about 2 quarts of oil and need to get some more before I run her.

Without a functioning PCV system, crankcase pressure has no means of venting, so yes, it would have just built up until it blew something out.

What bolt holes are you referring to? The smog pump holes?

I'm not sure what actually goes there. They are on the front of the block next to the water pump. They look like accessory holes, so it could be the smog pump, there isn't one on this car right now.

That same exact thing happend to me, but i lost just about all of my oil. Once i figured out where it was leaking out i just plugged it with a bolt. The hole my oil was leaking out was more towards where the fuel pump mounts on the block.

Happens to be right in front of the mech fuel pump oil galley.. just put a bolt in with some sealant and you'll be fine.. i've done it to all my engines regardless if they leaked or not since it took me a week to figure out it was coming through a tapped bolt hole ..
