poor man mods
Ok Im looking for any mods to get more power for 0-100 bucks. So far I had tuned my carbs secondary, K&N Filter, and flipped the filter cover over to let more air in (all the air still goes through the filter), and taken my ac system off. The only other mod on my car was done before I bought it and thats a shift kit. So any other ideas, I know I can upgrade the ignition system slowly, but I dont know if I would benefit from it at all with a stock engine. Oh and I have an LG4.

Re: poor man mods
bump the timing-free
full tune-up~$100-$200
get a head gasket kit, pull the heads and port them~$80
melling tourqe cam #mtc1 and sealed power lifters~$100
pull air injection system-free
cut out cat-free take the cat to a local scrap yard and they should give you about $20
performance muffler~$50-$100
but none of these things alone are going to get you much more power unless you need the tune-up, then you'd notice it, exhaust will make it feel faster though, or thats my experience

Re: poor man mods
I know the mods I did made a huge difference from when I originally got the car. Im hoping that when my friend gets his garage up hell give me a deal on a custom mandrel bent exhaust.

Re: poor man mods
personally i think you should do the tune up first and set your timing to 12 btdc and see how it runs

I think Ill check my plugs tomorrow I know my wires are like brand new. idle is smooth. Im not sure if it really needs a tune up, Im gonna go over as much as possible tomorrow since I actually have a free day.

Re: poor man mods
I agree with most of jonmarks suggestions there.
Porting the heads means you need a die grinder, (air compressor maybe), carbide bits, etc. So if you've got that, then you can do it cheaply.
I don't agree on the melling cam. You can get a summit grind with lifters for $70 and you have more choice on cam flavor.
Mr gasket distributor shim kit - $5. Helps keep your timing in spec.
Accel (or other), module and coil - $120 or so. This would be a later mod to do, after you've got more cam and compression usually. Test your spark and see how hot it is, if it's ok, leave it.

Re: poor man mods
this car is annoying the crap outta me, it never takes off the same. Sometimes it takes off like an suv then other times it screams down the road and chirps the tires into 2nd. Right now Im running 93 octane because Im over 700ft above sea level and the motor pings with anything lower. Any idea why it would variate so drastically?

Re: poor man mods
Carbon buildup could raise the octane requirement of your engine. You could look into cleaning it with a product called seafoam but i dont think its recommended for very high mileage engines. I think that warning may be only for running it in the crank case though.
Also have you cleaned your carb out lately? I wonder if the jets could be clogged giving you a lean condition..

The higher your altitude the less sensitive your engine should be to octane. It'll also want to run leaner.
700' is nothing though, i'm at 4000' and it's maybe 1-2 jet sizes.

Save up your money from all the aforementioned and start with a good exhaust system. Headers to tailpipe. Everything else is pointless if the motor has to breathe out through a coffee stir straw.
