Rebuilt 350 smoking a little at start-up
Rebuilt 350 smoking a little at start-up
Looking at a GTA with a rebuilt carb'd 350 and trans (14,000 miles) ... everything in it works perfectly fine in and shifts perfectly.
The only problem that I see is that the car blows a little puff of smoke at start up. My though is that since the car has 14,xxx miles on it, it should NOT be smoking at all. Though, in my past experience, most of the chevys that i've seen smoke just a little at start. When I had my camaro, it did that too and never really had a problem with it. The owner says that it'll just need a new set of valve seals and should be good to go.
Can anybody attest to this? Or have an opinion on this matter?
edit:
also note that the car was sitting for about three months previous to the current owner getting it (he only had it for several months).

Re: Rebuilt 350 smoking a little at start-up
My old 305 used to puff blue smoke at start up and when taking off into gear from a stoplight. It (the 305) needed valve seals, I needed a 350.
No smoke now, and that sure is sweet!

id be leary about the whole just rebuilt 14,000 miles ago personally.
Are their receipts?
what kind of high performance cam is in the 350? Maybe the guides in the head are toast due to a very aggressive set of springs without the bronze guides?
maybe the intake gasket is leaking by?
maybe just the valve seals?
see where i am going with this?
actually Is that smoke black or blue?
carb cars will puff a small amount of black from the accelerator pump shot when first started when pumping the gas before starting.

As long as they have proof that the engine was rebuilt its probably just valve seals, and nothing to worry about. what usually happens is someone will take heads in for some work and tell the shop to do it as cheap as possible. Then they come home with piece of crap umbrella seals. The seals get oil soaked, and then sit for *3 months* and viola, they are garbage, and blow smoke on startup.
