Head Swap Question...
I was able to acquire a nice (fresh) set of (3970162) heads off of a late 60's 327, a performer duel plane intake, headman headers, and a new Holley 650.
The carb, intake, and headers were worth more than what I paid for everything. My question is the heads. The guy I bought them from said they were "fresh" with new valves, 3 angle valve job, double springs, stock rockers, and PC seals, they have also been decked. He said he couldn't remember the chamber size; they are 64 or 68cc, one of the two.
Is it worth it to put them on my LG4 305 (85 camaro)? He said he was going to put them on a .030 over 305 but has too many irons in the fire right now.
He also has a set of fresh 58cc 305 heads but we couldn't find them. Would it be better to wait for them???
The reason I'm looking to replace the heads is because mine are in bad need of valve stem seals and I need this to be a Sunday project.
Any advice???

Re: Head Swap Question...
They should be fine, they will bolt right up. The only question I would ask is what springs are on there. If they are to stiff this will ruin your cam.

Re: Head Swap Question...
No such casting #...
There is, however, a 3970126.
3970126....67-71...327/350
They are not the high performance heads for any of those engines in any of those years; they're the base-model ones. IIRC 68cc.
In no event would they be an "upgrade" for your 305. The only question about any of that would be, how severe of a downgrade they would be.
The most important thing to find out though, is whether they have the accessory bolt holes. Without those, none of the rest of that matters; because you wouldn't be able to reassemble your car around them.
Regardless, you'd do better in terms of a "Sunday project" to simply replace the valve seals on your existing heads.

Re: Head Swap Question...
My bad, They are 126.
My sunday project is; remove one valve cover, rocker, and spring, check stud and valve size for both intake and exaust, put back together, lash, fine tune rockers, valve cover back on with new gasket. Call head shop on monday, see if they have PC seals in stock in the right size or order them. Then replace the seals on my next day off along with intake and carb.(the headers are another day)
Or, tear down, replace heads and head bolts, install rockers, lash, intake and carb, fine tune rockers. I under stand they are both all day projects, the new heads have such nice and clean ports and such. I'm sure the heads on there now are full of carbon and crud.
I could care less about the horse power part, I'm more into the torque myself. But if the 305 heads are a better choice with the smaller chambers I can wait for them.

Re: Head Swap Question...
If you're talking about spec'ing out the heads on the LG4, you'll be wasting your time. Do a search for the "416" casting (As that's what's on your car now, assuming it's still stock). You will find all you ever wanted to know. For example, 416 heads come with 1.84" intake valves and 1.5" exhaust valves.
The "other" heads you mention may very well be a set of these. They could also be 601 castings, which are very similar.
EDIT: as far as 126 heads go, I've been to a few races where "126" castings are legit as factory stock large chamber (76cc min) castings. Equipped with 1.94" intakes, 1.5" exhausts.
