help me build a faster firebird!

I need some guidance on my track day firebird project. I need the car to at least be able to keep up with stuff like new mustangs and ls1 cars on the track. I'm thinking that I'll either order a brand new engine through Year One for 3 grand, or do you think set of edelbrock heads (also available through Year One) would help me get to where I want to go? I know at some point I need to swap the stock TPI to help the engine breath easier. I'm not looking for a dragstrip burner, but something that will hold its own at a track day event. Thanks in advance!

i would say get a world 640 ci engine, 900 hp, probably a good 6 second car... but seriously, if you want to get a new motor go jasper, great prices, good crate engines, and they are really helpful

Ordering from year one sucks, the last time I ordered something it took a month to get to me. It was a floor pan for a '79 z28.

Re: help me build a faster firebird!

What are you willing to do?
Can you do the work yourself?
How much do you want to put into your project?
Do you want to go with a stroker?

Frankly, if you have 300 RWHp you will keep up & beat mostly stock new Mustangs and the LS1 cars. 300 RWHp is equivalent to about 350 Hp at the flywheel, so that should be your minimum target Hp. If you can do the work yourself, you can spend what you save, on more go-fast-parts.

Re: help me build a faster firebird!

just a set of heads wont do you much.. to get them to shine, you need to compliment them with a camshaft, intake manifold, headers, exhaust and so forth.. how fast do you want to go? give us more to work with.. price range? and goals for the car? holding its own on the track wont be cheap if theres alot of 11 sec cars..

yo gibson, 900 hp will not get you 6's.. in the 1/8, yes but def. not in the 1/4..

thats just the engine, i mean if he did full exhaust cam intake bro he'd do better than a six lol, nitrous too of course

Re: help me build a faster firebird!

it will probably be pretty hard to beat 900HP on a 640 ci engine

Re: help me build a faster firebird!

Well, I ran the car at Road Atlanta in May, and it wasn't too bad. There were a few cars that just left me on the straights (the mustangs, lt1 and ls1 cars like i mentioned, oh and a Lotus). budget is about three grand for the project. (I say that, but really, the project is never done!)

I am willing to do the work myself, and there are a couple of mechanics in the family to bail me out if I do get in over my head. three hundred at the rear wheels sounds about like what I'm after.

A friend of mine suggested a supercharger. Could I realistically expect to put one on a n otherwise stock engine and still have a reliable car? I know I would be much faster, but that does me no good if it won't stay together. what are your thoughts on that. I'm not running another event until probably the first of December at Road Atlanta, so I have some time to put together a game plan. Thanks for your help!
