I just got a 89 camaro rs with a 305 with Automatic transmisson on friday (june 8). And at first, as far as idleit was fine, basically it could just sit there for as along as i wanted it to and idle fine. The only thing is that on sunday i drove for about 30 minutes which was the longest i drove it and the check engine light came on but when i cut the car off and then restarted it the light was gone, and then the light came on again last night and went off again. But tonight i took my girlfriend home and as i got up to my house i let go of the gas so that i could slow down, and it just cut off. so then i stopped it and started it back up and it jumped around between 500 and 1000 rpm for a few times and cut off again, the oil preassure was also moving up and down at the same rate.
So basically this is my first v8 (my other car is a 2.0 sunbird)and most things under the hood are a little weird looking to me. So im wondering if these are syntomns of something in particular, or if not then what could it be?
i hope that all made sence im kind of distrought right now because im worried about my new car, but thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

i havent done anything yet, i checked the oil and there is plenty in there, its a little less than half way between the two marks. im kinda thinking it could be bad gas or something because the light never came on until about 15 minutes after i filled it up i when was on the way home from busch gardens (on sunday). But is it possible that if it had bad gas that it could run fine all yesterday and today and then all the sudden not idle?

you were on the highway right...?

probably something to do with the egr

but you should have a stored code now you can retrieve it and have a starting place...
search for paper clip trick for directions on retrieving the code
or there might be a tech article on the homepage about it

along with an oil change, new plugs, wires, rotor, dist cap, maybe flush the cooling system

 

Okay thanks a lot, if i get one of the techs to hook it up to the scanner thing will the code show up, one of the techs told me that if the light isnt on a code wont show up. And i was on the interstate when the light first showed up on sunday, and i was on the highway last night when it showed up. and today when it wouldent idle i was basically just rolling.
One more question, could it just be that the idle is just set too low or maybe the screw just backed out a little (if thats what controls the idle), should i be able to just adjust that or something?

 

well you cant really adjust the idle speed... however you can adjust the throttle position sensor which could also cause your poor idle there is a tech article on the home page about that it is like tps IAC adjustment...

i think the ecm stores a code for like 50 starts or something might be wrong

 

I just did the thing to see the error code and i got code 32 which is,"Fault in barometric pressure sensor circuit OR Fault in exhaust gas recirculation valve diagnostic switch OR Fault in electronic vacuum regulator valve", what should i do now, and also would that cause the car to not stay on?

 

today i replaced the egr valve and the car is still doing the same thing. I reset the codes by unhooking the battry for a few minutes, reconnected it and then tried to restart the engine. the service engine light came on, so i did the thing where you get the code and now its only flashing the number 12 code. what do i do now, does that mean that theres another probelem that has nothing to do with the egr?
